National Golden Retriever Update on National Databases and Surveys (posted December 2009)
With the co-operation of Secretaries and Breed Delegates and members from all States of Australia, the following databases and surveys for Golden Retrievers are now up and running: hip score results - see Registers.
Restriction of Litter Registrations - Eyes (updated 28 July 2010)
A request to the ANKC's Health and Welfare Committee requesting an ANKC conducted survey proposing the restriction of litter registrations to those litters where the parents have been screened for inherited disease of the eyes has been submitted to the ANKC's Health and Welfare Committee . Subject to ANKC approval, a notice and questionnaire will appear in State Governing Body journals once the survey is finalised.
The National Hip and Elbow Register (updated 5 May 2010)
A national database has been created to record all results of screening for hip and elbow inherited conditions. Records, submitted with the consent of the owners of the dogs, are regularly updated. Results published are those submitted by Dr RS Wyburn ; arrangements are currently being made for the submission of results from the AVA Panelists and Dr Graeme Allan.
In addition, each state Club has been working to obtain consent for the publication of retrospective data. Once an appropriate form, which is to serve as a request for permission to publish all retrospective data, has been approved and put in place, this valuable information will be included in the database and published on the NGRC’s website. Thankyou to Mrs Jenny Coulemanis, GRC of Victoria’s Breed Delegate for her expertise in undertaking this task.
K9database link to the NGRC website
Members are able to upload golden retriever pedigrees and other details which have not already been included in the K9data database via the NGRC website. This database is a valuable tool, providing full pedigrees for dogs from Australia and many other countries, together with the names of siblings, offspring and co-efficients of inbreeding, to name just a few. Attempting to create our own website would be an enormous job and the NGRC is very grateful to Amy Raby (nee Burzewski) for her generosity in allowing us to access her database via our website.
Interactive Survey on “Cause of Death” In Golden Retrievers (updated 5 May 2010)
Recently added to the NGRC website is an interactive survey form for Golden Retriever enthusiasts to record details of the “Cause of Death” in their Goldens. In time, as the data accumulate, important research can be carried out with the analysis of such data. Thanks to Mrs Hilary Larson whose sister was kind enough to set out the survey in a professional manner and to webmaster Mr Mark Hodges who was able to get the computer to make it all happen. To participate in the survey please go to the "Survey" page of this web site.
NGRC Health Sub-Committee
An NGRC Health Sub Committee is currently being set up under the Chairmanship of Mrs Ruth Thompson, together with representatives selected for their expertise in the field . The sub committee will look closely at systems put in place in other countries that will allow our Council to be at the cutting edge in ways of keeping inherited diseases in our breed, throughout our country, to an absolute minimum whilst being ever mindful of our breed standard.
All members are strongly encouraged to contribute to the survey and databases mentioned above. In this way, important current and historical data can quickly be accumulated, thereby allowing research to be carried out, with the aim of breeding healthy Golden puppies. When expecting a baby ourselves what do we all always say? "…….Just so long as it is healthy”.
